Finish & Form

We're often asked what makes one stringed instrument cost more than another, and it always comes down to the quality or grade of woods, fittings, and finish on each instrument. The Nicholas Gand Violin is made with far more superior materials than beginner and student models. The big sound, excellent playability, comfortable string height for the left hand, and other characteristics contribute to the superiority of an instrument that will increase in value and worth over time.

The Nicholas Gand Violin is constructed with aged tone-woods that are highly select. The solid, tight-grain spruce top is hand carved with great detail and attention to the thickness and measurement of the plates. The maple back is made with beautiful, tiger-striped flame accentuated by a warm varnish. The perfectly polished oil-based finish increases its attractiveness, especially when combined with the amount of flame on the back of the instrument.

An Incredible Sound

The sound of the Nicholas Gand Violin is warm and intricate, complemented by steel-core D’Addario Prelude Strings. The body of the instrument is made with select tight-grained spruce and maple tonewoods and finished with 100% high-grade ebony fittings. The wood selection for this instrument creates a projective and responsive sound that is perfect for advancing players who are able to bring out the intricacies of its sound with their own performance.

  1. Beautiful Sound 5 Star Review

Posted by on 1st Sep 2016

I bought this violin over one year ago. I waited a long while to write a review because I am a beginner, self taught violinist and I wanted to take my time to feel out this instrument. I chose to buy an intermediate violin because in the past I purchased cheap beginner violins and was discouraged form playing by how cheaply they were made (tinny sound, pegs slip in the middle of playing, etc).

I went found the Kennedy Violin youtube page and listened to the tone of all of their violins to find the one that would suit me best. The NIcholas Gand has a beautiful clear, timber tone. I knew instantly it was the right one for me.

As a beginner I made sure to have fine tuners added to all the strings on the tail. It's an absolute time saver when tuning. When kept in a stable environment, a great deal of tuning is not required. I have only had to tune with the pegs a few times -- they don't tend to slip like they do on cheap violins unless there's a change in climate.

An intermediate violin is perfect for the adult learner who wants to play for fun and personal enrichment. I intend that this violin will last me for the rest of my life. I'm already making a great deal of progress with this beautiful instrument. I whole-heartedly recommend this violin.
